The ecological value of Gramos was officially recognized just in
1999, after the Special Environmental Study was made in the
framework of the European Program LIFE - Natura
(LIFE96NAT/GR/003222). The study led to the incorporation of a
large part of the mountain around the peaks that streches over 345
sq. km in the European Natura 2000 Network (see map). The
'Preserved Monument to Nature' in the Barouga area existed before
that. It is a mixed forest of beech, Bulgarian fir and black pine of
130 hectares, which has not been subjected to forest exploitation and
is also included in the "biogenetic reserves" network of the European
Council. Also, four more areas, Katafiki, Arrenes, Tsarno and the
Nestorio valley have been characterized as 'Wildlife Refuges'.
Local agencies, environmental organizations and mainly local
communities have recently undertaken significant initiatives for the
protection, appropriate management and promotion of Gramos.
Visitors can contribute to this effort by discovering and getting to
know the natural beauty of Gramos always with respect to the landscape, the villages and the people.
