Culture: from tradition and festivals to the River Party at Nestorio

The local festivals

Local festivals are still going strong in the Gramos villages. The Agia Paraskevi festival takes place in Kypseli every July 26th. The Profitis Elias festival in Kotyli is on July 20th. On May 20, we have the celebration of Agios Nicolaos of Petritis in Ptelea and on the day of Descent of the Holly Spirit, we have the festival at the chapel
of Agia Triada in Kastro. On Christmas Eve they light up the traditional bonfire called 'boubouna' in Kranohori. And of course, on August 15th there are festivals everywhere - from Anthiros to the now abandoned villages of Giannohori, Monopylo, Livadotopi, Orilofo and from Gramos and Pefkofyto to Dipotamia and Ieropigi. And of course there are farming festivals such as the 'Chestnut Festival in Kastnofyto. At the same time, there are new initiatives such as the 'Tea Festival' in the Gramos Community.

The River Party at Nestorio

The River Party started in 1978 as a spontaneous event by a group of expatriates who come back to their villages during the summer and over the years it was transformed into a music festival that lasts several days and each year hosts the great names of greek music. During the first week in August, the Aliakmon canyon just outside Nestorio comes alive with thousands of people who come here to camp, sing and have fun together.

Over time, the festivities have come to include other activities as well, such as excursions on the surrounding mountains, sports, exhibitions, etc. and the festival is an excellent example for the rejuvenation of greek countryside.
