Geological history & formations

Geological history

Mt. Gramos started emerging one hundred million years ago from the submarine furrow that covered the area of present day Pindos. This distant geological past is revealed today by the fossils and shells found in the limestone rocks of the greater Gramos zone and particularly in the Fossil Forest area by the village Nostimo.

Landscape

The geological history is also portrayed in the characteristic area landscape. Wind and water have chiseled the diverse rock formations forming steep slopes and canyons, rocky peaks and 'twin formations' rendering a unique landscape. As an
example we mention the location close to the village Kotyli, a 300m vertical cliff eloquently called 'Haros' and 'Ontria', a small mountain formation in southeastern Gramos. It is a wide limestone plateau with dolines (limestone sinkholes) surrounded by steep rock 'walls' which emerged from the bottom of the sea as a result of tectonic force pressure.
