The Brown Bear

The bears of Mt. Gramos
 |
The local population on Mt. Gramos and the surrounding areas is calculated to be between 19 and 54 bears. It
is organically connected to both the subpopulation of Pindos and a smaller subpopulation in the Albanian side
and the Florina subpopulation. We stress the need to maintain the connecting paths and avoid fragmentation of habitats.

The Gramos bears prefer to feed on fruit such as cherries, plums and on the fruit of wild brush and trees
as beech, oak and wild rosebushes. They seek fruit in the orchards of abandoned villages. They also feed on
herbaceous vegetation and cultivated grains, ants and other insects while they complete their diet with a minimal
percentage of meat and honey. Usually, 89% of their diet comes from vegetables.

Their movement and tracks
Bear territory usually covers a few hundred square kilometers. However, bears move cautiously, usually after
sunset, avoiding undesirable encounter with humans. If we are careful, instead of the animals themselves we can see traces of their presence:

 |
paw imprints in the mud or water puddles, the broken branches of fruit-bearing trees
(possibly so that the young can eat along with the mother), rocks turned over in search of insects, broken tips of
small pine trees to mark their territory. Making use of such details, we can change the manner by which we
approach the forest landscape, without limiting ourselves to the superficial visual 'consumption'. |
